In Phil We Trust
October 10
After flying out to Ghana West
Africa, the teams found themselves wheeling and dealing... quite
literally. Andie & Jenna (Team Biologicals), who had only met so
many times, lacked the chemistry that the other teams were able to
display, leaving them out of the race in 10th. Now we're down to
nine as the Race to a million continues from Accra...

MAKE YOUR WAY
TO JAMESTOWN!
Make your way across town
to the neighborhood of Jamestown in Accra, Ghana. Once there,
find the Akotoku Boxing Academy, where you will find your next
clue.
You have $146 for this Leg
of the Race.
|
Following them on their
tails... (all times local)
- Katie & Rachel (Jersey
Shore Spikers): 0735
- Michael & Kevin (WuTubers): 0745
- Chad & Stephanie (The Almost Engaged): 0752
- Jill & Thomas (Team I'M Right!): 0757
- Connor & Jonathan (Team Glee): 0801
- Nat & Kat (Rhyming Docs): 0802
- Nick & Vicki (Team Ick): 0804
- Gary & Mallory (Miss KY & Dad):
That was quick. Brook &
Claire are the first to find...
ROADBLOCK |
YOU'VE GOT A
"ROCKY" ROAD AHEAD!
One of you must learn how
to properly wrap your hands in boxing tape before suiting up
in training gear. Once finished, you must work on the speed
bag and the jump rope for 60 seconds each. Once you knock out
both exercises, the trainer will give you your next clue. |
Brook decides to be an
amateur pugilist for this task. She takes her task to task rather
quickly, and the sweet science was never sweeter. Thank goodness
Claire isn't doing this. After the watermelon incident, I was kinda
worried.
Katie and Chad take up the
wrap as HSN claims...

SUPPLIES!
Travel by taxi to the
Dodowa district and find the marked supply depot, where you
will find your next clue. |
Chad's ready to train...
and so is Katie. Meanwhile, Jill & Thomas... are lost. Connor &
Jonathan belt out a tune... "♫Please drive fa-a-ster!!! ♫"
Chad decides that now is as
good a time as any to show off in front of Stephanie... Bad move.
Especially on a jump rope. Katie stops the oncoming cabs and lets
everyone know where the Roadblock is. Michael finds it. But he can't
wrap his hands around the task. Other boxers include Gary, Vicki,
Connor, Thomas...
And Nat & Kat are lost.
Asking the others for help... doesn't help. Neither does asking the
cabbie.
The WuTubers and the Irvins
finish the Roadblock, while the Rhyming Docs return to the Race course.
They arrive at the Roadblock last.
On the way to Dodowa, the
Racers encounter a large side of beef. Once they get to the Dodowa
Depot, Connor & Jonathan are the first to sing the praises of...

GOING BACK TO
SCHOOL!
Take one of the marked
wheelbarrows and fill it with construction supplies. Then
wheel the wheelbarrows to Asebi D/A Primary School, where - if
you have all of your necessary building supplies - the foreman
will give you your next clue. |
Team Glee load up and
move out. They head to the school where the foreman, seeing that
they have all the things they need, give them one more vital tool.

IT'S TIME FOR
A POP QUIZ!
Africa is the
second-largest continent in the world. But do you know EXACTLY
where you are? Travel to a classroom, where you will take part
in an African geography quiz. Once you are able to locate
Ghana on a map of Africa, the class monitor will hand you your
next clue. |
It's time to play...
"Are You Smarter Than a Ghanaian 5th Grader?"
Jonathan... doesn't know
where he is. Neither does Connor. Which is laughable. See? The students
even agree.
Jonathan & Connor eventually
figure out where Ghana is... on a map.
Brook & Claire find
the shop and run into the Race's first...
DETOUR |
BICYCLE PARTS
or LANGUAGE ARTS?
BICYCLE PARTS:
Use a stick to roll a bicycle wheel's rim down the length of a
soccer field and back without touching it with your hands or
letting it fall over. Once you have completed two passes, the
school children will give you your next clue.
LANGUAGE ARTS: Choose a proverb with eight
phrases highlighted that correspond to a series of eight
Adinkra symbols. Using a nearby decoder key, locate the eight
symbols in a massive word search-like puzzle. Once you circle
the correct set of Adinkra symbols, the school children will
give you your next clue. |
Connor & Jonathan use
their minds in the decoder, deciphering their phrase as "Kidney
beans, ladder, crazy..."
Brook & Claire load up their
wheelbarrow, but forget to deliver it. Remember, you need TWO
wheelbarrows in order to get your clue.
Nat & Kat... have a bum
taxi. But that's soon remedied.
More teams, more
wheelbarrows.
Back to Team Glee, though.
Their correct translation of "Kidney Beans, Ladder, Crazy, Rug, Celtic
Knot, Hearts, Crazy Chinese, Diamond" leads to...

MAKE YOUR WAY
TO THE NEXT PIT STOP!
Make your way on foot out
of the school and to the home of Awusa Ntso. This rural
homestead is the next PIT STOP for the Leg of the Race WARNING: The last team to
check-in MAY be eliminated!
|
PIT STOP
ACCRA, GHANA
HOME OF AWUSA NTSO
Team Glee, Connor &
Jonathan... Team #1! For their hard work, they win... $5000 cash
money! EACH!
For whatever reason, the map
task is moved indoors. It doesn't really change the fact that the Racers
still have NO CLUE as to where they are.
Team Ick are the latest in
the line of disgruntled Racers who don't give a flip about apologies if
it doesn't get the job done, as they take only ONE wheelbarrow to the
foreman.
Gary & Mallory spin a wheel.
They pass their first pass. Now the question... can they do it again?
Meanwhile, the Rhyming Docs take their supplies to be checked, while the
classes are in session. Ah, there are multiple classes. That explains
it.
Most of the teams opt for
Language Arts, but Brook & Claire overthink the clue, and end up
circling dancing African children instead. Woops. Now the 8 African
children dancing in a circle is the clue, but do you honestly think CBS
would make it that easy?
Jill & Thomas even go so far
as to search the kids' homework. That... no. Just... no.
Gary & Mallory finish the
Detour and head to the Pit Stop, just as Katie & Rachel start it off.
Nick & Vicki are still on the map and ask to use one of their cheats.
That... doesn't work. Ghana is the last country marked for them. That
makes it a little easier.
Back at the Pit Stop, Phil
and the happy local welcome Gary & Mallory as Team #2.
Chad & Stephanie study the
kids and the way they keep their wheels rolling... Chad takes to it like
a duck to water. Or a vowel to Pat Sajak. Nick on the other hand... too
busy yelling at Vicki to learn anything.
Brook & Claire try to figure
out the code one more time, while Chad & Stephanie take down the
three-spot.
Nat & Kat switch Detours
(and they aren't the only ones), while Katie & Rachel complete the
Detour and take 4th Place.
Fake drama between Nick &
Vicki is replaced by real drama, as Vicki's asthma kicks in at the wrong
time.
Nick & Vicki reconcile quick
enough to be named Team #5, followed by Brook & Claire.
Meanwhile, Phil gets an
idea. The teams are going to come back tomorrow to the school and
renovate some classrooms as a means of goodwill. That's nice.
Nat & Kat finally finish the
spinning, while Michael & Kevin complete their first pass. Michael is in
need of a medic, having exhausted himself to the point of dehydration.
Jill & Thomas are happy just
to finish 7th. Nat & Kat do the impossible... and get lost on foot. The
locals send them back to where they were headed, while Phil sends them
to... 8th position.
That leaves Team WuTube.
They've pushed in every sense possible these last 10,000 miles... and
they'll have to push even harder, because this is NON-ELIMINATION LEG
#1. Can they overcome the Speed Bump in the road ahead? Stay tuned.
