"Round of 16:
Women" -
March 7-9 Is
it just me, or did Scott Savol just write his ticket
right out of the competition? We'll see if he did on
Wednesday - but first, it's the Tuesday auditions.
As Simon tells the women to "Be good... this week, I
would not want to leave, because you're so close." (and
he has a point, since the men have been outperforming
the women), we start.
Amanda Avila is a Gemini - which means that she is full
of variety, but she may not be able to decide what song
to sing. Heh. She sings "River Deep, Mountain High."
What they say: Randy thought it was just ok, and
wondering if ok was good enough, while Paula says that
it was good and gives her credit. Simon says that she
was an average singer, though a good performer, adding
that she may have a problem this week. Despite a shaky
beginning, she didn't do anything to hurt herself, and
she is, shall we say, visually appeasing, and with a
nice performance, she should make the Top 12. I don't
think that she well, as there are too many other people
who are on the hot seat tonight...
As Ryan speaks to Nadia, who hopes that G-d has her back
after seeing her friend Celena leave, we hear from
someone who may be joining Celena if she doesn't sing
well - Janay Castine. Note to Celena - get some space on
your sofa for Janay. That was just awful - the pitch was
off, the timing was off and I don't know how you are
going to get a few seconds of her sounding good for the
end of the show clip. Randy takes the high road and
calls her pitchy. Paula takes the high road and said
that she had had good performances in the past. Simon,
of course, is far more blunt. "Let me use another
horoscope analogy - A suit case and plane travel within
24 hours because I don't think you're going to last
another week."
Carrie Underwood loves to fish - but she loves to throw
it back because Pisces are compassionate. AwwwBlech. She
sings "Because You Love Me" - no, not the Celine Dion
pop version, another country song. OK - We know she can
sing country, but I want to see her sing something else
and I want her to take more risks. Randy calls her one
of the best performers, but not one of the best
performances. Paula wants to see her back to the
happy-go-lucky Carrie spirit. Simon tells her that he is
going to vote her into the Top 12 - but he wants her to
connect to a risky song - but says that she sounds
fantastic, adding that the public will vote her through.
Are you sure, Simon? I'll explain that later...
As I said yesterday, Vonzell needs to hit the home run
here to make it to April. She sings "Respect", which, I
guess, is what she is looking for from the crowd. She
will get it, as I think that she has the best
performance so far, but that song still doesn't have a
lot of spark and I am wondering if she was intentionally
safe. Randy calls her sort of back, Paula says that she
is having fun, and Simon is wondering where the cow and
lasso is with her country outfit. Vonzell said that she
wore the hat and boots for her father, and that will
help her get votes. She says that she is being herself,
while Randy says that she is trying to be a singer.
Simon: 'That's debatable'. Ouch!
We start the second half of the competition with an
interview between Ryan and Jessica Sierra, who enjoyed
last week's comments from Simon, but knows that every
week is a different challenge, adding that she awaits
the challenge with the guys next week - should she get
that far. Nadia Turner, who is a Capricorn, wants to get
that far as well, and she will try it with "Try a Little
Tenderness". She redeems herself from last week, but the
women are just not going for broke like the guys have
been. Randy says that she has star potential (and the
Dawg Pound gives her some love) while Paula says that
she picks the right song for her. Simon says that she
took a risk and it paid off - and that will work for her
benefit later.
Mikalah hopes that she doesn't upchuck on the stage, as
Lindsey Cardinale throws up the song (heh) "I Don't
Wanna Miss a Thing." She sang the song well, but I don't
know if that is going to be enough. Randy thought that
it was alright. Paula loves her voice, but didn't like
the song selection. Simon calls her Ryan Seacrest - she
does everything right, but there's something missing.
Ryan thinks that there is something missing from Simon's
wardrobe - water, as he throws a glass of water at him.
Heh.
Mikalah calls herself a quiet Capricorn. Yeah, ok. She
sings "Somewhere", which is a really poor choice of
song. She can't hit the vocals and it's a very good
thing that she has had 2 good vocals under her belt.
Randy calls it an interesting song choice - and it was
pitchy, but she gets credit for taking a risk. Paula
senses that she admires Barbra Streisand and she pulled
it through at the end. Simon called the first part
hideous, the last part fine - but he's puzzled why she
is going into an aging machine, adding that she isn't
showing her youthful quality. The judges argue with
Simon, but I agree with him. Mikalah has been old for
the past 2 weeks and she desperately needs to get
younger.
We end this with Jessica Sierra, she is a Scorpio -
which is a passionate and determined person. This is her
second year auditioning for Idol, and she's been waiting
for a long long time... segue way to "The Boys Are Back
in Town". That song had the most energy in it as Jessica
is determined to show that last week wasn't a fluke.
Randy says that it was one of the best performances of
the night, and Paula seconds it. Simon says that with
that outfit, she couldn't have selected a better song...
title. Let's say that the outfit was...revealing.
We get the reprisal of the singers, and then we are
gone. Here's what Chico thinks...
Chico thinks: After that
performance of "Dreaming of You", Selena's not only
spinning in her grave, she's doing backflips and
wall-springs. If Janay doesn't go this week, then the
Coke ain't kosher in Idolville. That said...
YES!: Anwar, Mario,
Nadia, Jessica
Maybe: Bo, Nikko, Anthony, Carrie, Vonzell
Wha?: Amanda, Lindsey, Scott
HELL NO!: Janay, Travis, Constantine, Mikalah
I'm going to go with
those four as to who SHOULD get the axe. Not necessarily
who WILL, because the audience is a fickle lot. They're
fickle, they're not stupid, though.
Gordon thinks: I think that who SHOULD be going home
will be Janay and Lindsey. The problem here is that
Janay and Lindsey fans know this, and they will be
calling in crazy to save their singers. If they are
persistent, there could be an upset - such as someone
who has been losing her country fans to Jessica Sierra
and her rock fans to Nadia Turner. Someone who's fans
may not be voting for her because she's safe - and
perhaps Simon convinced them even more by saying that
she's going to get in, regardless. That person is CARRIE
UNDERWOOD, and if there was a huge upset, it could be
her. As for the guys, it looks much more cut. Bye-bye,
Travis, and either Scott Savol or Constantine will be
joining him. If there was an upset, I would think that
Anthony or Bo could be leaving, as the votes to keep
Scott or Constantine around would be drawn from Anthony
and Bo, respectively.
And the rankings...
Excellent - Anwar, Mario, Jessica, Nadia (Yep, some
changes)
Good - Nikko, Mikalah, Bo, Carrie
Not Wonderful, but Safe...maybe... - Amanda, Anthony
Trouble - Scott, Constantine, Janay, Lindsey, Vonzell,
Travis
In 24 hours, we'll see who gets to the final 12 - and
who gets to be the final 4 cut.
